Help with russian words

Postby Vanderer » 16 Jan 2009, 21:31

Hi all, could you help me with russian words which are difficult to understand?

Sometimes russians say "zhest' " (tin) in not applicable context... What does it mean?

And "slava bogu!" Why "Thank God" say even not so religious guys?

Hello Peter and welcome!

"Zhest" (жесть!) - this is some like "Cool, it's shock! " in russian slang.
Slava bogu (слава богу!) ... The settled expression. "Thank God!" you say in case of relief or when you don't have problem more...

ЖЕСТЬ (or ТРЭШ/ trash) is often used by some young people when they describe very hard conditions/ situations they are in.
For example: 'I'm snowed under, work 12 hours a day. And I sleep no more than 4 hours... When I come home, my parents always begin to urge me to marry as soon as possible... And today I have missed a bus and had to go by foot under the rain... ЭТО ПРОСТО ЖЕСТЬ (ТРЭШ)!'

A lot of Russian words are deeply rooted. For example, russian "thanks" (spasibo) birth from two words "spasi & Bog" (save me God), so when we say SPASIBO we wish to somebody be saved by God. But nobody think about it :) Now it just a word we say to thank somebody :)

If anyone could be so kind as to help me with a translation... "Memories" by Within Temptation is a beautiful song and I would love to translate the chorus...
"All of my memories keep you near.
In silent moments,
Imagine you'd be here.
All of my memories keep you near,
In silent whispers, silent tears"
Here's the URL for anyone who would like to listen to the song : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhzJO34SCoc

In russian you can tell something like:
"Ты рядом во всех воспоминаниях моих
В тишине представляю что ты здесь.
Ты рядом во всех воспоминаниях моих,
в тихом шепоте, тихих слезах"

I love the series because of Lost DVD the wide range of characters and how they interact, while being left on a mysterious island after their plane crash.Grey's Anatomy DVD You have a hero / doctor, a crook, a robber beautiful woman, a hilarious victory lottory, a father and his young son, a Korean couple,The Big Bang Theory DVD siblings rich, addicted to heroin, a young pregnant woman and a late former Repulican Guard Iraq. All these people have a history of substance to them and through the course of the season, their stories are told. You also have the island itself, which is a puzzle that has a huge creature,The Office DVD stalking and who can not see polar bears. Yes, he seems confused and crazy, but believe me it is very addictive to watch.House MD DVD I highly recommend it.I think Lost is one of the best television series in the history of television, and if you have not gotten on board, I recommend that you buy this fantastic DVD of the first season, and get caught up soon.
