Kuriles islands

The sovereignty over Kurils islands is the object of a a dispute between Russia and Japan.

The Soviet Union seized them at the end of WWII, in a move that Japan has always contested.

The issue prevents Russia and Japan from signing a peace treaty and officially end the conflict.

Do you think Russia should keep the Kuriles islands, or hand them back to Japan? And why?

Its spread over every where like this the situation is also there is Kashmir, The best idea would be to conduct a problem free voting of the people of that region by an election process with strict rules as not to get any frauds, Let the people there decide where they should live with Japan or Russia.

The problem with that system is that it rewards the present occupier of the islands, to the detriment of the previous inhabitants; as such it is likely to be opposed by Japan.

The present population of 17,000 is formed of Russians, Ukrainians, Belarussians, Tatars and Innuits. They came after WWII, when the Soviet Union took possession and the Japanese settlers fled following the defeat of their country. The actual population is likely to want staying with Russia, but that would end the Jaspanese claim.

The Kuriles islands have been disputed between Russia and Japan for centuries. In the 18th century they were part of Japan, but were captured by the Tsars in the 19th century. Japan retook them in 1905 after the disastous Russo-Japanese war, only to concede them again after the Treaty of San Francisco, post WWII.

Yes I don't believe that a Poll like that would end the conflict even though it gets a good answer but Japan would stand against that and will not support the Poll terming it as not practical.

Leave the people alone let them make the island a new country and live in harmony.
