I could see governments doing that in future as part of their war on terror, and I believe some are already doing it.
Personally, I am quite indiferent to it; I don't have much to hide, and my ideas and activities are non-subsersive. I think that only a monority of suspects will be targeted by these measures.
But I can see the point of people who said it's a restriction of liberties.
Obviously, you could imagine all that stuff being used against individuals who do nothing extremist: trade unionists, political party members, activists, etc...
